Welcome to the Northwestern Library

This blog was created in response to our visit to and tour of the Northwestern University libraries. We were lucky enough to look behind the scenes and rare collections that the library has aquired over the years. The five areas that our tour focused on, were the Governemnt and Geographic Information and Data Services, the Melville J. Herskovits Library of African Studies, the Transportation Library, Digital Media services. and the Charles Deering McCormick Library of Special Collections. This visit to the library was very informative and interesting, it is our hope that the blog has done the visit justice, and you find it as cool as we did. We would love to hear your comments and responses!

For a quick flashback of the visit, check this YouTube video out

The Northwestern University Library seemed very confusing to get around, but I liked the separation of the different collections. Color did not seem to factor into the design of the library very much, although the solid colored carpet used in the radial shelving areas to designate entrances and exits was interesting and helpful.

I really enjoyed the Northwestern University Library. It has been my favorite library so far. I really liked how the collections were seperated into different rooms with welcoming atmospheres. Every room felt like a completely different library. My favorite part about Northwestern was being in the older part of the building. I thought it was really interesting to see how the architects designed a building during the great depression and how they saved money along the way. (the ceiling designs) I also enjoyed talking to all of the people in the library. Everyone was very friendly and wanted to share information or interesting stories about their collections. I especially liked the Africana collection because of how large it was and the wide range of materials that they had. It also was nice to talk to someone who really loved what he was doing and had first hand experience.

Northwestern was definitely an interesting library to visit because of the different collections. It didnt seem like a library at first because of the plain hallways that you have to go down to get to the different sections, but each section was extremely interesting. My least favorite was the transportation, because we didnt get to see the collection that they had. Northwestern has a lot to offer its students and the community.

i didn't get to go to this library, but the video really helps give me an idea of what it was all like. I didn't realize that it would be all old castle looking. I'm sorry I missed it!
